Matteo Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence
One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
