Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
